On September 12, 2013, during a chapel service, Student Government Association President, Alisha Cox, made the long-awaited mascot announcement. Johnson University Tennessee (JUTN) athletic teams will now be known as the Royals.
The University administrators set two priorities for the new mascot selection. First, it needed to fit all athletic teams, both men's and women's, with no modification. Second, it had to be tied to the mission of Johnson University.
David Legg, Vice President for Student Services, said, "When students wear a Johnson University Royals t-shirt I want them to remember they are here with a mission and calling from God to share the gospel message to a world of people hurting and dying apart from a relationship with God through Christ."
In previous years, men's sports teams were known as the Preachers and women's teams as the Evangels. During later years, some teams became the Spirits. Since the 2011 University name change, much discussion has surrounded the mascot subject.
